Madrid Barajas Airport - best luggage storage & metro stop

I think my head cold is preventing me from interpreting the Madrid airport website...I'm trying to figure out the best luggage storage to stash my bag at the airport and catch the metro into town for an overnight stay. The metro appears to only stop at T2 and T4. I'll be flying in to Madrid on a domestic Iberia flight (T4, maybe?) but will be leaving on an international flight on Delta (T1, probably). I assume but can't confirm that the left luggage is outside of security, so no matter where I leave it I'll be able to retrieve it upon my return?

Has anyone done this and have practical advice? Thoughts appreciated (and I'm hoping this is an on-point, not pointless post so I don't offend the regulars!)

Where do you want to go "into town."?

Frank, sorry, I meant to include that. I will be staying in the central city, planning to visit the Museo Thyssen Bornemisza (I will have been in Madrid earlier in the trip, Madrid is the airport that gets me home).

Yes, baggage storage is outside security. Since you'll be arriving at T4 (or possibly T4S) and leaving from T1 (that's what Delta uses), take the shuttle bus from T4 around to the other terminals (T1 will be your first stop) and seek out the luggage storage area tucked into the left corner of the arrivals level. It's manned and they'll screen your baggage first. Then it'll be there for you when you arrive for your flight the next morning. Then you'll have a rather long-ish trek through T2 to the Metro station.
Personally, I'd take my bags with me if at all possible.
