I am considering renting a car next week to drive from Lyon to Triberg, Germany via Switzerland (spending the night in Bern) on the A1. I will be with my sister and 3 year old nephew. Is driving through the Alps a bad idea this time of year? It seems like it would be a beautiful trip! Google and Via Michelin both say it would be about 6-6.5 hours total. Does that seem correct?
A1 in Switzerland doesn't go through the Alps, although if the weather is clear, you should be able to see them. Your route will cross through the considerably lower Jura mountains at least once (possibly twice, I'm not 100% certain around Geneva). I wouldn't worry at all about your route at this time of year... and actually, I wouldn't worry much in the winter either. The Swiss are very serious about keeping their Autobahn network open and smoothly running.
Don't do it at all. I promise you will be disappointed by the small waterfall and the most touristy town around it. Other than that it's usually cheaper to drive Lyon via Geneva, Berne, Basel, Freiburg than via Besancon. The Swiss vignette is €40 flat for an entire year...
