We are near the Perrache train and bus station. We’d have to get to the Part Dieu station to take the Rhonexpress to the airport, which is certainly doable but I’m wondering if there is a direct way from Perrache to the airport. Bus maybe?

No, the buses to the airport used to run all the way from Perrache, but they were withdrawn when the Rhonexpress was introduced. You need to take the tram from Perrache to Part-Dieu, then walk through the railway station to the east-side tram stop that the Rhonexpress leaves from.
