Luggage storage on train

Any insight as how you store your luggage on the train once you have boarded? Does it stay with you or is there a luggage car? Taking train from Rome FCO airport to Civtavecchia. Thanks for info and help.

You are responsible for your luggage. If it's carry-on size, it might fit on the shelf above your seat. Bigger luggage may fit between seats. There is usually a place for luggage at one end of the railroad car. However, thefts are known to occur so if you use this, find a way to lock it to the car itself so no one can take it.

If someone comes up to you and offers to help you with your luggage they are either trying to steal it or looking for a tip. They don't work for the railroad.

Never let it out of your reach ( not just out of your sight ). Have a great trip!

Thank you for the solid advice! We will be using a 25" rolling suit case and hope it will fit between the seats or in front of us? Idea's?

Never had a problem with leaving my luggage in the area provided at the end of the carriage.

There is usually space at one end of the carriage for suitcases. If you're in a compartment train, the luggage should be able to fit in the compartment with you. If your luggage is out of your sight at the end of the train, you might want to secure it somehow, even if it's a clip.

Like Rick says "No thief is going to ask "excuse me, how is your bag attached?""

But yet again, another reason to pack light.

Most of the prior postings refer to train travel in general in Italy. There is no direct train from FCO to Civit -- so you will be making one change. Trains to Civt are a commuter run and we have found in eight trips that the car set up varies greatly with respect to luggage storage. Lots of people will have lots of luggage as they are all headed towards the cruise ship especially if more than one ship is in port. 25" suitcase are pretty big. Will not fit the overhead racks so you may have to hold them in your lap if you are late boarding the train. This will be a situation of putting your luggage where ever it fits and people will stack it in the aisle. We once sat on our luggage in the aisle.

If returning to Rome after the cruise, buy RT tickets. The line to buy tickets in Civt is impossible.

Wow !!! Hope you are a family of ten. But with four carryons, probably not. Two teenage daughters???

The Eurostar trains have good luggage storage. Near where you enter the car you will find the luggage bins. Get there early so you are first in line to board. Use the bins for the 24" bags and put the carryon bags on the overhead racks. If you have a cable lock, run it through the handles of the 24" bags. But just getting to and from the trains station is going to be a struggle with that much luggage. Probably have to use two cabs. Luggage carts are available, just have to find them. Allow plenty of time. When you get to the station, have two guard the luggage and send two scouts to find the luggage carts. A lot of times you can find carts on the track platforms. But sometimes locked up and need a Euro coin or two. The Florance station is fairly easy to get around and not too big. Termini is something else -- much, much bigger.

Just curious, why so much luggage?

Good luck.

Have to disagree about a 25" bag being too big for the overhead racks. We travelled with a 23" and 25" bag and never had a problem getting them in overhead racks, however, some coaches do not have overhead racks. They did fit between the seats - provided someone had not beat us to it. We did leave them (unattached) in the racks at the end of the coach when we had to, and never had a problem, but agree, they are vulnerable.
