My husband and I will be riding TGV trains, second class) from Paris to Avignon, Avignon to Lyon, and Lyon to CDG airport in Paris. We will have two suitcases (about the largest that could be carry on for an airplane). Where on the train can they be stored and is it safe? Thanks.
Joyce
My husband and I bring along a bike lock cable and fasten our two suitcases together. The lock on ours is really simple - three numbers in a row and we just leave the first two numbers set correctly. Makes unlocking the cable a snap. Makes boosting one really awkward. There's always storage at the end of the car but that can fill up. Overhead storage is also available but will your suitcase fit?
If your bags are small enough to be carried on a plane, they will fit in the overhead racks on a train.
Apparently, we are not the only ones leaving the first two numbers and moving the third. BTW, love the cable locks for luggage.
Hi Joyce, husband and I carried two 21 inch roll-ons on the TGV from Cannes (11:06am departure) to Paris last month. Plenty of space on board. There is storage space designated for cases throughout the car. In August when the TGV should have been full the cars (18)were about half empty and some folks simply put their cases on the seat next to them. Yes, it's safe on board. I do like the idea of luggage locked together. The cases would not fit in the overhead storage spaces like they do on our flights. Enjoy your trip.
Last year we went Paris-Amsterdam then back. A week later we went Paris-Strasbourg then back to Paris. On all four segments we were able to put our 2 21" rolling carts on the overhead above our seats.
Luggage theft is extremely rare on TGV trains. The only time you might need to keep an eye out, just to keep your mind at ease, is at the station stops. You can usually your seats to be near the luggage storage using the schematic of the train carriage (car) when you book advance tickets. All travelers should know it's always wise to keep any valuables or documents on your person and never put anything of value in your luggage. I don't ever worry about our luggage since all a thief would get is a beat up old carry-on with clothes we could easily part with and a bag of dirty socks and underwear. Having to buy all new stuff in France is not an unpleasant proposition anyway....
