Luggage Question - Condor Air

My husband and I are flying YHZ - FRA - TXL in October.

2 questions for anyone who has flown with Condor recently:

  1. We like to travel carry-on only. My carry on fits the measurements, and I can get it to the 6kg weight (ugh). BUT... what are the chances they will let me take a back pack as my 'personal item'. Their website makes reference to a purse, a laptop case, and an umbrella, as extras allowed in addition to carry on. My back pack is just standard size back pack, and will likely weigh 5-7 lbs and will have an Ipad in it. Thoughts on if they will let me take both items on?

  2. I do have the ability to check my carry on suitcase for free (I just prefer to travel carry on only when possible). So if I check it, will I pick it up in FRA and then recheck it to continue on to TXL? We have a 3 hour layover in FRA.

I've done carryon and a backpack with them. But my backpack is smaller than yours - it's a Vera Bradley quilted thing and when I want it to look more like a purse, I carry it by it's tiny top strap and pretend it's not a backpack. It fits my iPad and a whole bunch of other stuff as well. They do check luggage size - at least at SeaTac.
