Luggage on SAS

Has anyone traveled on SAS and know the carry on baggage rules. Their website says one item weighing 8 kg. We have a small carry on and have packed lightly so that is okay, but are we allowed a small bag/purse also? I would like to take my Rick Steve backpack, but can't have it count as my one item.

I agree - it could be clearer. Most other airline sites will state "...and one personal item...".

Having said that though, that fortuitously-timed thread makes it look like it is probably OK.

A common way to get around just barely making the 8kg cut-off is to put heavier items in your jacket/pockets...that also creates more room if you get a gate crew that makes you stuff your small backpack into your larger one at the last minute. Rearrange ASAP once on the plane.

I just flew to Copenhagen and back on SAS. Their limits are the same as Lufthansa - 18 lbs. When we were waiting for the flight a person in the gate area went around and checked bags. As far as I could tell he was checking them for size pretty much the same way US carriers do and made many people check the bags they had intended to carry on. The bags he was taking away were larger "carry-on" bags and those that were obviously over-filled.

I never saw him weigh any bags. We packed less than 18 lbs. but may not have needed to worry about it so much.

My ticket says one carry on item and two checked bags - so that's what we planned on. We didn't bring any extra hand carried items. My Rick Steves backpack was packed inside my carry on (with my flying stuff inside it). When we boarded I pulled the RS backpack out and put it under my feet while the carryon went in the overhead bin. When we got off, the backpack went back inside the carry-on.
