Are lockers still available for storing luggage in train stations in Europe? I have heard that since 9/11 most were removed. A few years ago my boss and I stopped at a smaller station in Provence, France and the attendant laughed when we asked if we could leave our luggage someplace for the day.
Most major train stations have either lockers and/or a staffed luggage hold desk.
Last summer we used lockers in train stations a number of times when we had a day in town and a night train. Many of them now use a credit card system for payment and locking / unlocking. We needed only one larger locker to fit bags for two people. The $10 or so cost was well worth the not having to carry a bag while we used local busses, walked through an open air museum, and wandered about town, before taking a night train.
Yes, I think lockers are making a slow comeback. Larger stations should have them or a left luggage office, the smallest stations maybe not, or not yet.
In Italy, the lockers are mostly gone. Instead, many medium and the large train stations have staffed luggage facilities.
We noticed in Italy that many of the smaller stations are no longer staffed at all. There is a ticket kiosk only.
