luggage compartments

Last year our luggage sat in the seats on our train ride because they would not fit in the overhead bin. Are there any dimensions available for the rail bins on the trains in Italy. Thanks

Margie,

I've never seen any information posted on the dimensions of rail bins on trains in Italy (or anywhere else). You might check the web sites for the respective rail networks to see if anything is listed?

I often leave my Daypack sitting on the seat beside me if not occupied. So far I haven't had any trouble fitting my larger Backpack into the overhead bins. There are usually large luggage bins at the end of each car, however if you place luggage there it would be a good idea to "secure" it in some way so it doesn't disappear when you're not looking.

The only other suggestion that comes to mind is that you might want to "downsize" your luggage and perhaps go with soft-sided models (such as the RS Convertible bag). The "soft" luggage is a bit more compressible, so can be fit into luggage bins more easily than hard-sided luggage.

Good luck and happy travels!

You must have some pretty good sized luggage. We have found the overheads will handle easily carryon size luggage or even the "larger" carryon. We have always found bins for large luggage near the entrance to the car. We often placed our carryon luggage in the end bins just for convenience and put the day bag on the overhead. Maybe you should reevaluate your luggage size?

The luggage bins at the end of the cars are usually large enough. We did not have any problems storing our luggage. Be sure to use cable locks.

When I traveled by train in Italy, I found that my 20 inch roller bag just fit the depth of the rack (handle facing you). That would force anyone with a taller bag to slide it sideways in the rack (taking up more room). I traveled on Italy's EuroStar trains.
