Luggage collection when transfering to second flight

I am flying from Dubrovnik to Rome through Munich. I am flying Croatian Air to Munich and then Lufthansa to Rome. All stops are within the Schengen district. Will I need to collect my bags in Munich or will the airport automatically move them to the new airline which means I will only need to go to my next gate. The flights are on one ticket. Knowing this will inform how long I need for a layover.

This routing seems a bit odd. There are direct flights from Dubrovnik to Rome.

At any rate, both of these airlines are Star Alliance members and have an interline baggage agreement. With one ticket, you should be able to check your bags all the way through to Rome. Munich is usually a very friendly airport for transfers.

If you haven't purchased your ticket yet, consider a direct flight on Vueling Airlines from Dubrovnik to Rome. I took this airline for that flight and was quite pleased.

The key is one ticket. If you are using independent tickets or tickets not linked, then your luggage will not be transferred. It is the airlines that do the transfer and not the airport. Since you are on one ticket, you should be OK -- BUT -- double check at check-in to make sure your final tag for your luggage is Rome.

this is really helpful. Thanks. We have not booked yet and we have not seen any direct flights from Dubrovnick to Rome. We are traveling mid April and that may be the issue. However, we never heard of the airline Vueling and when we looked they have one flight on the day we need to travel and 2 flights on the days before and after. We will book with them. Thanks so much. This solution is perfect.

Vueling is owned by the same company as operates British Airways and Iberia. That doesn't mean they are partners. Vueling follows the discount model of bargain airlines where there are plenty of extra fees. Often these lines do not connect to other carriers so I should check that aspect if you want to make a connection. Some use the phrase "self connection" which means you are on your own at the intermediate airport.
