Luggage on buses goes under the bus. The driver, or other passengers will open the doors. You cannot take a roller board on the bus, there is no room. A small daypack will fit over your seat.

One suggestion, make sure you watch your luggage when placing it on, and when other passengers get off.
We've never had a problem with anyone taking our luggage either by mistake, or on purpose, but I do worry a bit about that happening.

There is an express bus, and a slower one, make sure you take the faster bus, less stops.

the bus will drop you closer to old Siena. If you take the train, you will have to taxi it to town, unlike Florence, the train station in Siena is outside of town a bit....

If you take the bus, you will be so glad that you did! I was unsure about it until we did it. The Florence train station is a zoo, with lots of steps up & down. Taking the bus was so much easier! I was careful to watch my luggage, but there was no stop between the two cities! Not having to lift my bags up into the train was great.

Yup, larger bags fit easy, and bus works great. But loading and unloading baggage is kid of a free-for-all. Like Ellen suggested, keep your eye on the bag, and I would put something really colorful on it to help you spot it.

Debra,

I took the Bus trip from Florence to Siena on a past holiday, and it's actually quite a nice trip. I had to store my main Backpack under the Bus, and took my Daypack with me.

I was also a bit concerned about someone grabbing the Pack when the Bus made a stop. However, I kept a sharp eye out for Pack Mules, as thieves would have needed one of those to carry my Pack!

Cheers!

Is it possible to place a ricksteves roller suitcase above the seat on a bus or is it possible to buy a ticket for a seat for your suitcase so you don't have to store your suitcase below? I too am worrying about someone grabbing my bag and unfortunately there are several stops between my departure and destination cities.
