Lufthansa strike impacts flight 9/2

I received a notification about 3 am that my 9/2 flight from Frankfurt to Ljubljana was cancelled. It was time to scramble as I am leaving from Seattle this morning!

United answered quickly but the rerouting options were not terrific. Now I am going Seattle to San Francisco to Munich to Ljubljana and leaving 2 hours earlier. I was awake now, I knew I could get to the airport earlier.

My biggest worry is the 1 hour connection in Munich which does not seem possible, but I am going with the idea that at least I will be closer to the final destination. I am glad I gave myself 2 days early arrival for my tour. I may need both of them.

I knew travel was going to require extra flexibility this year. I just didn’t know I would get to practice quite so much of it off the bat.

From the Munich Airport website

Announced warning strike of Lufthansa pilots on 2.9.2022

The pilots' union "Cockpit" has called on Lufthansa cockpit staff to go on strike on Friday, Sept. 2, 2022.

As a result, there will be delays in operations and flight cancellations. All travelers who have planned a Lufthansa flight from Munich during the strike period are asked to check the current flight status with their airline or tour operator well in advance.

Other airlines are not affected by the strike.

My one hope is that the Munich - Ljubljana flight is on Air Dolomiti now. I am not sure I can make the connection and I am not sure that flight will go either.

This is going to be a “growth” experience for me……….,

Yeah, Munich currently isn't showing it as Air Dolomiti, they're showing it as a Lufthansa CityLine flight

I hope your connections work out and the impact to your adventure is minimal.

We are scheduled on Lufthansa in 2 weeks, Denver to Munich to Rome. Fingers crossed that the work stoppage and its fallout is resolved by then. Thanks for letting us know.

Our 9/1 flight from San Diego to Munich is still on but our connecting 9/2 flight from Munich to Milan was cancelled. The Lufthansa call center is not taking calls. Our travel agent is on the case. We plan to go to Munich. After that...?

I don't know if this is street legal to post a recommendation like this on this site but I want to do a shout out to our travel agent, Sheri Smith, at Elizabeth Holmes Travel. She was on the case and has already booked us through to Milan on another flight. She has gone above and beyond on other occasions too. Whew! This was a close call we were almost literally ready to walk out the door when we were notified that our original flight was canceled.

Hi Carol, Geez, that's not fun. Maybe ask a UA flight attendant on flight to Munich for help getting off the plane quicker? Find space for your carryon up front?
A one hour connection in Munich is absolutely possible, if things go well!
I've politely said 'Entschuldigung bitte' with a carryon all the way from the back making a tight connection in Frankfurt, people were nice. I've seen others politely ask to move ahead at immigration. IF you do miss your Munich connection or flight is cancelled, I would call UA in the US, I've done this myself and they've rebooked me. It was much quicker than waiting in line. Then you just need to get a new boarding pass. Do you have Viber or data roaming on your phone? Good luck!

Carol, I hope it works out as smoothly as possible. And congratulations to you for having the foresight to build in a couple of days in case they end up being necessary. I hope you get to enjoy them in Ljubljana rather than in transit, but at least you’ve given yourself the flexibility necessary to make your tour start in time !!

Keep us posted.

I’ve made to San Francisco. Too bad it was flying in the wrong direction!

I’m trying not to give up hope on the connection in Munich but temper my expectations at the same time.

Yeah, forget about what the Munich Airport website says - as you already knew and the Lufthansa website confirms

LH1696 - Operated by: Air Dolomiti

Good Luck

Happy news to report! I am sitting at the gate in Munich actually waiting to board. I would a have made the regular connection, but it was delayed 30 minutes as well. I even had time for the restroom and to get more water!

Thanks for all the encouragement and advice. There were many desperate people on my flight to Munich that saw their connecting flights just disappear and were simply told to “talk to Lufthansa” after landing.

I realized I forgot to mention how I was able to get the information about the cancelled flight in time to completely re-arrange my flights. My trip it app on my phone checks emails when I am not (like the middle of the night) and notifies me by a special tone of important updates.

Another reason I like trip it.

Now, the real question is - is Air Dolomiti still handing out cookies made by Pasticceria Giotto as their in-flight snack ?

Oh I am so glad you made it, and time to spare, as well!

And indeed, that does sound like a very key feature for TripIt!

Enjoy Ljubljana
