Lufthansa seat selection

Today I was able to leave go on the Lufthansa site and choose my seats with the Lufthansa confirmation code. I reserved these flights from Denver to Athens for next Sept. with United miles and previously I was unable to choose my seats. Hope this really works! No extra charge, either.

Yes, good on Lufthansa. SWISS, however, is holding to the select-at-checkin method for code-shared flights. Will keep that in mind the next time I book a long flight.

Can someone please explain to me how this works? I have a reservation on Lufthansa next month, which I made through United Airlines. After reading this post, I went to my Lufthansa account, but was not able to select seats. In fact, the seatmap showed no available seats (I'm sure that's not true). I do have the Lufthansa confirmation number. Perhaps I am doing something wrong as I am still getting the seat selection on checkin message. Thanks.

Lufthansa code-share seat selection will only work with trans-Atlantic flights. If your Lufthansa flight is a "domestic" European flight you can't pre-select your seats.

My Lufthansa flight(s) are transatlantic: Boston to Munich, then onward to Barcelona; Rome to Munich, then onward to Boston. I made a direct purchase from United, meaning I did not purchase with miles. I know I can't select seats on the "domestic" flights. Perhaps my problem with this is that I made the purchase through the United website and not the Lufthansa website.

I flew Austrian Airlines last summer (division of Lufthansa, uses same systems) and, given the fare class I purchased, wasn't able to select seats until a few days before the flight. Up to that time, I could go to the seat selection menu but all seats appeared to be sold out. However, I also put in a bid for upgrade to business class and no sooner did I get access to seat assignment than by bid was accepted and I chose a bus. class seat instead.

When seat assignments opened up, I got an email with a link to my reservation. I purchased through Travelocity.

I checked again today to see if our seat assignments were still on the reservation and they are! I don’t know why I was able to choose the seats this week when earlier I was told I had to wait till check in. And I didn’t have to pay to choose the seats. It’s strange that it is not the same for everyone or at different times.

I think it may take a few days after a purchase through (for example) United, before you can book Lufthansa seats. I was able to reserve seats for my 2015 or 2016 trip, but I didn't do it right away, and yesterday I had no luck for a May 1 departure booked on Wednesday. I'll wait a bit longer and try again.

I think it depends on the travel class seats that you purchase. We purchased Premium Economy seats and was able to choose our seats when we made our reservations. Our friends who were looking into the Economy class seats said they would have to pay extra if they wanted to pick their seats.

Since this thread has bubbled up to the top again, I'll update my earlier comment. For this year's trip I have not been able to select a (standard economy) seat more than 24 hours before departure. I have the locator code, but even a phone call to Lufthansa did not solve the problem. I was prepared to pay a $25 or $30 fee, but no dice. It sounded as if the phone rep was saying that their computer system doesn't communicate well with United's.

I will be flying Lufthansa for the first time, RT BOS Sicily. Booked standard economy months ago with reward mileage at the United's site. After a day or so, I signed in at the Lufthansa site with my last name and the booking code and found my seats were assigned for every leg. Since then, I had made several seat selection changes. Looking forward to my flights.

I have a Lufthansa flight next month in Europe as part of an Air Canada itinerary. Simple solution: I phoned Lufthansa and a representative booked the seat for me. I had to provide not just the ticket booking reference but also the Ticket Number. And of course, with Lufthansa, I had to pay for the selection.
