Lufthansa Launches Stopover Program

https://www.breakingtravelnews.com/news/article/lufthansa-launches-stopover-program/

Turning a layover into a city trip: Lufthansa now offers passengers on Singapore and U.S. routes the opportunity to extend their stopover at the Munich hub for up to seven days. As an additional step, hotels and other tourist offerings in the Bavarian capital can be included in the booking.

The offering is integrated directly into the booking process on lufthansa.com and is available for all travel classes. During booking, customers can add the Munich stopover option for either the outbound or return journey and flexibly set the stay duration between 24 hours and seven days.

That is fantastic news! we flew Lufthansa from JFK to Catania last year and stopped (broke the trip on tour own) in Munich for 5 nights....had a fantastic time! I will look into flying with them to Sardenia next year..and stop again in Munich....

But curious..apart from the possible free hotel, how is this different than whaat we did, which was to buy JFK-MUC-CAT and on return, CAT-MUC and, five days later, MUC-JfK???

I suspect the price may be less since you would no longer need to purchase the CAT-MUC leg separately. It would be priced like a round-trip between JFK and CAT. Icelandair has a similar option.

Yes, Laura is correct. I will be leaving in a month or so for a trip to Scandinavia, but I have scheduled a 7-night stopover in Iceland for myself and my daughter. It's really a great deal and it didn't cost any extra and it's just included in the booking.

I don't know how Lufthansa will do it, but with Icelandair you just include it during the booking process. There's a section where they ask you if you're adding any extra nights to Iceland. You just check that and go from there.

My impression is that they offer the convenience of booking a hotel during the purchasing process, but at your expense.

I think you're right, markcw. Besides hotels, you can integrate rental cars and activities. I'm sure the convenience would be worth something, and possibly there's a discount if you book that way. Otherwise I'm not sure I would really see the advantage except for some convenience

It would be great if Delta could offer something similar. Maybe the competition will make them implement it? Fingers crossed.

I believe it's available via SkyTeam partners KLM and Air France at Amsterdam and CDG - you have to be a Flying Blue member to book it.

Yes, I've thought about doing that since I'm a Flying Blue member, but I know it's not quite as easy as Icelandair from what I remember. I think you have to actually call Flying Blue and talk to them about it. Whereas with Icelandair, you can just do it online during the booking process.

I am a member with so many different groups. I know I signed up for Flying Blue couple of years ago when I had to fly Air France, and I see my upcoming flight on KLM (booked through Delta) shows on Flying Blue as well. I never thought of looking for a flight from SkyTeam website.
