Lufthansa and Personal Bag Carry-On

Well, after 3 years of researching, we FINALLY booked our flight to Italy. We used United frequent flyer miles, so we were able to book with them using their partner, Lufthansa. I was wondering how strict Lufthansa is with their carry-on luggage policy. My husband and I will both carry on the Rick Steve's Roller as our main carry-on which meets the criteria.

I am wondering about the personal bag. Lufthansa states we can bring on 30 x 40 x 10 cm (11" x 15" x 4"). I was hoping to bring our backpacks which are 30 x 47 x 20 cm (18.5" x 11.75" x 7.75"). Do you think these would be OK, or do I need to downsize the backpacks?

If it matters, I'm traveling on the following flights:
Boston to Munich on Airbus A350-900
Munich to Naples on Airbus Industrie A321
Venice to Frankfurt on Airbus Industrie A321
Frankfurt to Boston on Boeing 747-8I

Thanks for your replies. :)

no your personal bag at that size will not fit under the seat in front of you;
and the flight is probably full.

I've never tried to carry on a large item, but I think if you under-pack the backpack so that it squishes down to within Lufthansa's size limits, you should be OK. Just guessing, though, since I've never needed to do that.

Thanks, acraven. I was thinking the same thing. But I may try and downsize so I don't run into any problems.

Who knows. It depends on the gate personal. On two occasions out of a dozen or so flights with Lufthansa, they have strictly checked the size and weight of all bags to the frustration of many customers. So I am always prepared to be under their size and weight requirements. Your backpacks are rather large for a personal items and obviously bigger. They are really about the size of a carry-on bag.

Thanks, Frank. I always stay under the requirement, but then I always seem to see people carrying personal bags that could hold a body. But, you're right, I should probably be safe than sorry and pack below the limit. I may even check one bag that has items that I wouldn't miss if it got lost and then I would have more freedom to carry on items that I really don't want to misplace.

It does not meet the airlines criteria, and not just by a little bit. I have carried on small backpacks like the RS Civita without being challenged and you might do the same. But these sound like full fledged backpacks so be prepared to check a bag at the gate if you carry these.

Thanks, Alan. Yeah, I think I'm going to downsize the bag. I was hoping I could partially pack the bag and it would be OK, but I don't want to risk it.

According to the Lufthansa site quoted by you te maximum dimensions of carry on's are 55 x 40 x 23 cm in economy class. 30 x 40 x 10 cm refers to an additional item you are allowed to bring into the cabin. When I checked in at EWR recently they were lesse interested in the dimensions of my carry on than in the weight (max. 8 kg).

sla019, Lufthansa allows those dimensions for the 1 main carry-on piece of baggage. I was referring to 2nd personal bag that is allowed to be carried on.
