Luftansa question about connecting train

I'm looking into airfare right now on Google Flights from LAX to Dusseldorf roundtrip via Frankfurt Airport. You would fly from LAX to Frankfurt, and then take the train to Dusseldorf.

Do you collect any luggage that you might have checked in at Frankfurt, or do you pick it up from some counter at the train station in Dusseldorf?

If I decide on the way to Germany that I don't want to go to Dusseldorf and "throwaway" the Frankfurt to Dusseldorf train ticket, does the returning flight get canceled?

This would all be booked on United's website (more expensive on Luftansa's)

Thanks

Are you looking at Rail&Fly? The added train tickets are not route specific. You pay a set fee and you get the right to take any DB train to any where in Germany from Frankfurt airport within 24 hours of landing. So you could change your mind and go somewhere else or no where.

No, you would go through immigration then collect your luggage and go through customs (walk out the green door), then you take luggage with you on the train.

You can do this with United, but you will just have trouble finding anyone at United Airlines familiar with the program. Lufthansa you can do it on-line.

It doesn't say rail and fly on United's website.

Like I said, United airlines people are clueless on this. You will need to talk to somebody.
The set price is 34 EUR for a one way 2nd class, or 68 EUR both ways. Considering the walk up price for an ICE train from Frankfurt airport to Duesseldorf is 90.50 EUR, its a pretty good deal.

Here is description from the United Airlines German website. Use google translate to read it.

I don't think it's Rail & Fly. If you book a LH ticket to Cologne or Düsseldorf, you often get a ticket with an "intermediate stop" in Frankfurt which in fact is a flight into Franfurt and a transfer to an ICE train to your final destination (LH "Express Rail"). Your will pick up your luggage in FRA at the Express Rail counter and carry it with you on the train.
