I am leading a student travel group through Europe. We have an off-day in Lucerne and we want to go to Munich for the day. What is the best--not necessarily the cheapest--way to get there?

Seriously, by train it is a 5 to 6-hour journey each way. I doubt it would be faster by charter bus. That is not realistic for a day trip.
Why don't you just enjoy the very good local opportunities from Luzern? Mt. Rigi, Mt. Pilatus, lake boat trips, etc.

That is what I figured. Mile-wise it is not that far, but it does not appear that there is anything convenient.
