We are staying in Lucca, and departing for home out of nice. What is the least expensive way and quickest. Also good place to stay in the Nice area?

We will be renting a car in italy but thought it would be too expensive to return it in Nice. There will be 6 of us traveling to Nice and flying home from there. We will be spendig up to 4 nights in the areas around nice and am looking for a special but inexpensive place to stay.

A few years ago we needed to get from Genoa to Nice. This is what we figured out. It's way too expensive to drop a rental car in another country, so we found the town nearest to the border with an office for our company. In our case it was Autoeurope with an agency in San Remo. We drove there and took a train the next morning to Nice. I think it was an intercity - - very inexpensive and didn't take long. If you want a car for exploring outside Nice, Autoeurope's office is just next to the Nice central train station. We picked up a new car there and went about our travels.
