So I am looking through the main search engines such as expedia, travelocity etc for flights to Scotland over Christmas. Does anyone have a suggestion for where else to look. Do you think about 3900/4 is about the best I will get?? Can't decide whether to book now or wait a few more weeks. We can only go economy seats (I know - one day I plan to be rich though:))
Try.....www.kayak.com
try dohop.com
Christmas is an expensive time to fly generally. I'd do kayak as the earlier poster suggested, and sign up for deal alerts. That's how I found a super steal to Paris next March - got an email when the fare fell below my minimum. I also checked kayak on a near-daily basis. The best time to buy airfare is when you find a price you can live with. (Edit: stupid dashes!)
I just tried Kayak for a flight Dec 21 from Miami to Edinburgh, returning on Dec 29, and I was getting prices in the lower $1100's. Of course, a lot depends on the actual dates you will fly (day of the week, particularly) and the length of your trip.
Becky, $3900 for a group of four sounds reasonable, and if my math is correct that's $975 per person. I paid considerably more than that for ONE airfare this year. Happy travels!
Just under $1000 per ticket is not bad for holiday travel (assuming that is all taxes and fees included). The only other places I would try are Consolidators like www.airgorilla.com and www.airlineconsolidator.com. They can sometimes do odd connections better, have deals on blocks of tickets, or may give you a break on buying four tickets. I would not be too concerned about buying right this moment, for late December you can look for the next 3 to 4 weeks before buying...maybe...basically, if you see something that looks good, go for it.
As has been said holiday travel can be expensive. The best way to lower the cost is to extend your trip, at one end or the other (or both) outside of the traditional travel days. If you can do that and try some combinations on the search engines, you may be able to save quite a bit.
It would be more hassle, and more time, but you could probably get a cheaper flght to London and then train/fly a cheapie airline up to Scotland. Easyjet, Ryanair etc. If you do, keep in mind you'll have to change airports.
