We are planning on a 10-day trip to Turkey and are looking for advice on booking flights. Our search in the net yielded nothing but standard fares that were over $1,000 for each roundtrip including fees and taxes. We don't mind making a convenient stop at London or Amsterdam if it saves on fares. Thanks in advance.
When? $1000 total RT each isn't unreasonable for peak season travel. Turkish Airlines is your only non-stop option...everyone else connects somewhere. Try www.skyscanner.net and www.kayak.com and watch fares for a period of time.
Sorry folks, we are planning this trip in the Spring of 2010.
When I did a search at www.kayak.com for mid-week flights in May I saw $785. on Iberia and $813. on Air France. It's hard to tell what airfares will be like for spring 2010 but that still seems high to me from NYC. I'd set up the e-mail "Fare Alerts" as Michael suggested and watch them for awhile.
If you're going to get the airfare monitoring websites to send you e-mail alerts, do it now,....don't wait. Air fare sales can happen at any time, and there's no guarantee you'll get a better deal 90 days out. Actually, about $750 in May sounds pretty good!
Have you tried airberlin.com? Also Singapore Airlines sometimes offer really low fares from JFK to Frankfurt and from Frankfurt there are plenty of cheap options to Turkey, like Air Berlin, Condor, SunExpress, TUIfly.com and others...
Given the fact that your trip is a comparatively short one, you might prioritize convenience in travel over savings on airfare. If a cheaper fare ends up costing you an extra half day in connections and transit, it probably isn't worth it unless the savings are substantial. Having that half day for touring is valuable on a short trip.
