My Aunt & I are flying into Rome. We are planning to rent a car to drive Italy and France for 2 wks, then fly to Dublin, which we will be spending another week, and then flying home.
1. Any suggestions for a reliable car hire company in Italy and Ireland?
2. Best places to visit en route from Rome to Paris?
3. Reasonable places to stay?
Think about this instead: Fly to France, rent car, drive to Italy, fly to Ireland. Don't think Rome to Dublin would be much more expensive than Paris to Dublin.
The problem is that most credit cards will not cover CDW for car rented in Italy, but have no issues with care rented elsewhere and driven into Italy. Paying CDW out of pocket is rather steep.
Price it out and see what happens.
BUT, double check the drop charges. They can be substantial when dropping in a different country.
Oh, yeah. The drop charges. Kinda forgot that one. Drive Paris-Rome-Paris? Actually, it's only about seven hours of road time back to Nice from Rome and if you can fly from there to Dublin late in the day.........
You've built yourself a conundrum. You need to cost out all combinations, including spending an extra day getting the car back into France if need be.
Don't you need an International license to rent a car in Italy? I know you can pick one up easily at AAA.
It's not a license, it's a permit - just a translation of your American license into several languages. They are $15 at an AAA office.
