We'll be traveling into London Victoria station on the tube (Victoria line) and transferring from there to the rail station (taking Southern train to Gatwick). How long does the walk take from the tube to rail station? We'll be doing this on a Sunday morning (May 1st to be exact). I know they're doing escalator work there, but not sure how that would affect us (especially on a weekend). Thanks for your help!
long answerthe trains to gatwick run every 15-20 minutes, and you just buy your ticket at the window (and the ticket is good for a ride at any time), so it doesn't really matter how long it takes you to get from the tube to the station. short answerlast year, when we did this, it took maybe five minutes. ten if you stop to use the restroom, as i did (which i don't recommend if you are in a hurryit's a long walk down many stairs!) have a great trip!
At times the lines to buy rail tickets can be long (especially on weekends) but there are automatic ticket machines at most stations. So allow time for that
10 to 15 all in, including getting a ticket from a machine and finding the platform - just look at the big board. If pressed for time, the Gatwick Express (runs from the very right hand end of the station) will allow you to buy your ticket on board for the same price as Gatwick Express tickets on the concourse. The escalator work won't be a problem at that time. However, engineering works on the Tube WILL be. The Circle line is COMPLETELY CLOSED that weekend (its a Bank Holiday - what else?) , the District is only open from Embankment to the west, and the Victoria Line is untouched. Have a look at The Planned Works Calendar .
