London to Stonehenge area then ferry to Normandy D-Day beaches

I will be checking with London tourist information to get on-the-ground info, but if anyone out there has made a similiar trip i would appreciate to know how you did it. Ferry from Poole or Portsmouth? Ferry to Cherburg or Le Havre? Was it diffcult to get from the Stonehenge area to the ferry area?(We have 4 in our party and have railpasses that include France.) We want to consider a private tour of Stonhenge that I heard mention of somewhere.

I have not done this yet but have it on my list of to dos!! You can get a ferry from SOuthampton to Caen(ths port for it). SOuthampton is reachable by train(major port). The great part of arriving in Caen is that you are not far from the D Day sights/

I have no idea how you get from Stonehenge to the rail line...Stonehenge being somewhat in the middle of no where. How are you getting to Stonehenge in the first place by rail? Stonehenge just doesn't appeal to me despite loads of trips to the UK.

I am starting to think we should just rent a car if dropping it off in Southampton or Portsmouth isn't too much, because I want to see Avesbury, too, and it's sounds like maybe too many rail/bus transfers/times to wait, etc.
