London to Calais

In mid-September my wife and myself will be taking the train from London to Dover--then the P and O Ferry across to Calais. Question--for the train and ferry--would it be best to book tickets ahead of time--or will we be able to just "walk-up" and get our train and ferry tickets the day we are crossing to France? Thanks for any advice!!

Space won't be an issue, and there's no discount on ferry prices. There could well be a dicount on advance purchase train tickets, but I wouldn't know.

There are no advance purchase discount fares for London-Dover Priory. However, the fare you will pay varies according to the time of departure (peak or off-peak hours) and the type of train (high speed from St Pancras International or regular from one of several other London stations). For timetables and fares go here.

FYI, just saw on another forum that P and O does not allow foot passengers on ferries that leave after 7 P.M.

We did the same trip you are planning but in the opposite direction. It is too far to walk from Dover Priory train station to the ferry port. Over a mile and heavy traffic on the road.

I'm not so much concerned about any discounts--but whether there would be any problem in trying to get a "walk-up" ticket--and being told that they(the train and/or ferry) were full!!

When we went (June, 2008) we bought our tickets ahead. However, there was tons of room for more passengers on the very frequent trains. And the ferry is huge and could have carried ten times as many foot passengers as it did. However, there was no space on either recently when they grounded all of the planes because of the volcano.
