London to Brugge

Does anyone have any suggestions for getting from London to Brugge, Belgium (and than back)? We would like to take the ferry at least one way, and noticed that it less expensive than EuroStar. Our family of 4 is backpacking~so no car, just public transportation. Thanks! Susan

EuroStar from London to Lille and then local train to Brugge would be your quickest route. If you can get the least expensive round trip EuroStar tickets, price might not be too bad. Remember to include the cost of trains to the ferry in your comparison.

Thanks so much, Frank. Have you taken the ferry over? We were thinking that it would be nice to see the "white cliffs of Dover" at least one way, but not too sure how to get from London to Ramsgate. Or whether it would be worth the hassle? Any experience in this?

Thanks so much, Susan

Southeastern trains run from both Charing Cross and Victoria to Ramsgate. The Victoria-Ramsgate route is a bit faster. See the Journey Planner at www.nationalrail.co.uk.

No, Susan. I haven't taken a ferry across the channel, so I can't provide any information about that option.

Most people who use the ferry to cross the English Channel are doing so in their own cars, and most of the other traffic is trucks. The ferry from Ramsgate does not take foot passengers, but the ferries from Dover to Calais do, and there are buses connecting the ferry to the town centre and railway station. There are hourly coaches from London to Dover Ferry Port.

From Calais to Bruges, you could travel by rain, with a change of train (and possibly also of station) in Lille.

The total journey would take you most of a day, but you would see the white cliffs. Remember that Channel crossings can be rough.

Thank you so much everyone! I am so glad that we found out before we got to Ramsgate and could not get to Belgium without a vehicle. We are now booked on Eurostar (got some pretty good rates~yeah!). Thanks for all your help. Susan
