We are getting ready to purchase train tickets using the Netherlands Rail Booking site for our trip from London to Amsterdam to meet our Rick Steves' Tour. We see that you can stopover in Brussels and stay the night as long as you board a train to complete the trip within 24 hours. Has anyone done this before and do you have any tips.

Yes, when we travel from Birmingham to the Netherlands we use that feature. We either stay just outside Brussels in the beautiful city of Gent (Ghent in English) or at a 4 or 5 star chain business hotel like Crowne Plaza or Novotel in the centre of Brussels.
We use the trick suggested by RS to stay on weekends and off peak weeks at the big hotels. We can usually find a pretty good deal after a bit of web-search.
