I have round trip tickets to London on 04/09 returning 04/25. I need to visit Madrid, Paris and Rome before returning to London. I was thinking of using the Eurostar between London and Paris, but was surprised by the cost. Is it possible to do budget airlines between all those cities and avoid the Eurostar completely? If so, any suggestion as to which order to do them?
Joan,, Eurostar tickets are on sale 90 days before ,, and the cheap ones sell out fast,, you have left it late to get the cheapest tickets. It usually is a great alternative to the flight, since it is city center to city center, no extra expense getting to and from airports.
Even the cheapo airlines are going to get you at this point, its only a few weeks away,, their cheapest tickets will be gone too! What price are you seeing on Eurostar for the tickets,, it does matter which dates and times you choose, rates can vary alot, often a bit higher fri-sun( weekend trippers) and sometimes departures at odd time of day are cheaper.
With both the chunnel train and the discount airlines, you have to book early to get the lowest fares. I put an arbitrary date of 4/12 into chunnel site and got a fare of 56 pounds for the early train, and for Easyjet Luton to CDG the fare is 66 pounds. So the train is still cheaper.
I found a price of 87 GBPs for a return trip, going on the 11th and returning on the 25th, not sure how much time you wanted in London,, so just made up dates. Thats about 138 dollars , which is about twice what you could have paid if you booked a couple of months ago, but not too terrible are they?
I'm surprised at the prices you found for Eurostar. Thanks. Now I'm thinking of flying London to Rome, then Rome to Madrid, then Madrid to Paris then the Eurostar back to London. I am flexible on the dates between cities, but that's my projected route. What do you think. (I know the prices would have been better a couple of months ago, but I didn't know about this trip until recently.) Thanks.
Just a thought.....when you're comparing prices make sure it's "apples to apples". That is, make sure all the sites are showing prices in the same currency...not Pounds & Euros.
You are so right about the currency! Thanks for the tip.
Unless it is too late, it would make more sense to do an open jaw ticket - and much cheaper. Into London and home from Rome or Madrid.
Unfortunately I don't have the option of an open-jaw flight. Also, Prague has been thrown into the mix!
15 days, four major cities,, and now throwing in Prague!! I would throw one other place out then,, for me it would be Madrid,, but as you like.. Remember everytime you change location you are basically eating up a day with travel ( getting to airport or train station ,then to hotel, then reversing order when leaving) . I am going for 25 days and visiting 5 places,, and I feel I am crushing myself a bit, wish I could take on more time,, but wouldn't tack on more places!
I know it's crazy, but that's out of my hands. (LONG story) Just dealing with it. Because I need to be in those cities, I'm just seeing what I can and getting ideas for return trips!
