My college age son is doing a study abroad in London during January but wants to meet up with his Dad in Italy for about 8 days prior to his classes. He needs to fly into London, drop some things off at the school, then get to Rome. Any suggestions for air vs train? After Rome he wants to visit a friend in Metz, France, before continuing back to London for classes. He will be traveling alone, so I'd appreciate any advice to pass along to him! Thanks!
EasyJet flies London Gatwick-Rome Fiumicino. British Airways has competitive fares for Heathrow-Fiumicino.
EasyJet flies Rome Ciampino-Paris Orly. Vueling flies Fiumicino-Orly. Take the train from Paris to Metz. The standard 2nd class fare is €55. However, if you book NOW at www.tgv-europe.com, you can get a Prem's fare as low as €17. To keep the site in English and to avoid being bumped to the Rail Europe site which doesn't offer discount fares, choose Great Britain as your country of residence.
Take the train from Metz back to Paris and the Eurostar from Paris to London. Book Paris-London ASAP at www.eurostar.com. To get the best fare, register as a resident of the UK. If available, the lowest youth fare (persons under 26) is £34.
