London Gatwick - Passport check / Immigration when connecting to a separate flight

Hi all!

My husband and I booked a last minute trip to Europe when a cheap fare popped up. We had been loosely planning a trip for a while and when an ideal fare came up we pounced. We started planning the logistics of our trip, starting in London and then heading to Amsterdam before going south to Spain. However, our travel plans changed slightly leading us to want to start our trip in Amsterdam instead and then head to London as our second stop.

We are considering booking a separate flight from London to Amsterdam from Gatwick, taking off about an two hours after our nonstop flight from California lands. My question is what the process will be at Gatwick? Will we need to go through customs and immigration and then back through security and the whole shebang to board our Amsterdam flight? Or can we go through a simple passport check and stay airside? We are not planning on checking luggage, but instead will have one carryon each.

I know the risk with booking separate tickets, allocating enough time, missing your flight due to delays, etc. But if we were to do it, how would it go down?

Any help is appreciated! :)

You will have to go through both Security and PP control at Gatwick, however, it's rather painless. Last year we flew BOS-Gatwick- Madrid on Norweigian and had to. They had a separate track after we we landed before we entered the terminal proper and were the only ones in it.
