Logistics on getting from Tuscany, Italy to Avignon, France

My husband, 3-year-old son and I will be in Montebenichi (near Sienna) in late June and need to get to to Avignon, France. We will have a rental car in Italy and our plan is to drive it as close to the border with France as possible and then take a train (it's too expensive to take the car into another country). What border city in Italy would you recommend we drive to that has a train station with frequent trains to Avignon? We looked at Genoa, but for some reason, Auto Europe locations aren't open June 24 so we can't drop off the car there. Thanks. -Margaret

Ventimiglia is the last notable train station in Italy before crossing into France.

The Auto Europe website is currently that the Genoa airport location is open on the 24th. There is frequent bus service from the airport to the train station.

Thank you both! There doesn't appear to be an Auto Europe in Ventimiglia, but thank you for pointing out that the Genoa airport location is open. That should work. -Margaret
