Locking luggage on train?

Will be traveling on day train from Florence to Venice.
Does my luggage get stored elsewhere on the train than by my side? Do I need to bring a cable lock to secure it? thanks

I only do carry on and second class rail (no reservations). I've never checked a bag. It just goes overhead on a metal rack. I use a small masterlock with a wire to attach my bag to the rack. That way I can nod off and not worry about my bag disappearing.

It doesn't hurt to buy a retractable cable lock. They are compact and light and not expenisive. It is nice having for some peace of mind that your luggage isn't going to be stolen!

Thanks Brad & Kate for your quick reply !
I think I'll take a lock along with me.

All of your luggage can go overhead. There is plenty of racking. In addition on the Eurostars, there is space behind your seat. We did use locks on our luggage for non-airline travel but next time, we would certainly bring a cable that can lock to the rack. It's really easy for somebody to walk off with your luggage as you nod off although we didn't see any of that happening.

I would use a lock. It will make your luggage more difficult to take. Thieves look for easy fast targets. Most luggage can be overhead or near you, but I did see some luggage stored near a door on a train. I used my TSA lock to keep the zippers locked.

We bought a cable lock for our luggage for a train trip a fewe years ago. It was the cable type and we set the code to be the same as our other locks. To our surprise the TSA people removed it from a side pocket on my roller luggage. We never knew why--if they intended to use it the lock would be useless. We were not happy.

A few comments:

  1. There are luggage racks for larger bags at the end of each car.

  2. You can bring a cable lock if you wish but it isn't necessary.

  3. The reason a previous poster had their lock removed is that the TSA only allows you to place "TSA locks" on luggage (which they can open with a special key). You can get them at any luggage store.
