Lockers or baggage storage in train stations

Does anyone know if most train stations in major European cities have lockers or baggage check counters? I was under the impression that after 9/11 a lot of these types of services were curtailed for security reasons, but I may be wrong about that. If these services are available, it would certainly be convenient and help with my planning for a trip to Belgium, France, and Germany this summer. Thank you!

Hi Carrie,

Most major train stations still have at least a baggage check, but sometimes the lineup can be long (depending on the day), and they often have restricted hours of operation.

Many people on this website constantly recommend that you look for a hotel near the train station and pay them to store your bag for the day.

Lockers in Italy have been removed. Many large train stations have staffed luggage storage areas. I realize that you didn't list Italy as one of your travel destinations. Your question is a good one and has a broader answer.

The larger train stations still have baggage storage. It's hard to be more helpful without knowing which stations you have in mind.

Carrie:
I too had heard that most of the coin lockers had been removed for security. However, last spring when I travelled extensively around northern Europe, I found lockers in fully 75% of the stations. I have also used the station luggage check, and have never had a problem with lines. Maybe I was just lucky.
