My husband and I will be going on a cruise mid-August. Our ship will dock in Livorno at 8AM on a Monday and depart for Civitavecchia on Tuesday at 8PM. We would like to go to Cinque Terre upon arrival at Livorno and overnite in Monterroso and return to the ship on Tuesday. What would be the timeliest and safest way to make this happen so we don't miss our ship next day?

Gilda, If you're planning an overnight stop in Monterosso in mid-August, I'd highly recommend getting a room booked SOON! I don't know how far it is from the Livorno docks to Livorno Centrale rail station, but I'm sure someone in the group here has that answer. A Taxi would probably be the fastest method. There's a direct train from Livorno Centrale to Monterosso departing at 11:26, arriving 12:54 (provided the schedules don't change). Current fare is listed at €14 PP. It's an InterCity train, so you may be able to pre-book your tickets. Many of the other train departures have one change at La Spezia Centrale. You can check the details on the Trenitalia website. Since you are not returning to the ship on Monday night, be sure to check in advance what you have to do to ensure that you will not have any trouble. A coworker of mine was going to do something similar, and found the cruise line's requirements daunting. They didn't sound too onerous to me, but you do need to let the ship know, in advance, that you will not be returning on Monday night, and do intend to return Tuesday night.
