Does anyone know the best way to travel from Lisbon to the Algarve? We've heard that renting a car in Portugal is very dangerous. Is anyone familiar with the rail system at all? Any recommendations on the best way to get around?
True, I have heard from many of my EU friends that Portugual is the leader in accidents for the region, however, I found that Sicily was a lot more exciting to drive in than the route you're looking at.
We rented at the Lisbon airport, and, once we cleared the city, it was pretty much a freeway all the way to the coast. We spent 4 days touring around the Algarve, then snuck up the backway to Evora(really exciting to get to the hotel!) and found another "backdoor" gem before returning the car. Maybe its changed in the last couple of years, however, I don't think the Portugal transportation system is as up to snuff as most of western Europe, so if you go that way, just be prepared for problems.
We all hear lots of silly things. Renting a car in Portugal is no more dangerous than doing so in Columbus. Best way to get around the Algarve is by rented car. Cross that of your list of things to worry about.
