Not a very seasoned traveler and I was wondering if about the travel bottles people fill with shampoo and other liquids. Is there a trick to keep them from leaking on the planes?
I fill plastic travel bottles with shampoo, wool lite and other stuff about 3/4 of the way full...squeeze the bottle with the lid off until liquid is almost to the top....screw lid back on. This will allow the bottle to expand during flight. Then put them in double zip lock bags. I've never had anything spill or leak using this method. Learned how to do this here years ago when we only had the Graffiti Wall.
All liquids carried on to a plane must be in a one quart size clear plastic bag. I use zipper lock bags. The liquid I have now is a small bottle of shaving oil and a small bottle of Lubriderm. I carry several other bottles of less than 100 ml, 3.2 oz filled with whisky or vodka. None have ever leaked. We use solid shampoo from Lush and toothpaste tablets from Archtek.
JB and Monte are both correct. For carry-on liquids, you must follow the 3-1-1 rules explained on the second page here. Each container may be no more than 3 ounces; you must fit all your containers in a 1 quart ziplock bag; 1 bag per passenger. As an aside, while officially you are required to remove the bag at security screening (so keep it on top), many screeners no longer do this, as long as they can see it clearly on the x-ray. For liquids in your checked bag, there are no size or quantity limits, but putting them in ziplocks is a good idea, to prevent leakage from ruining your clothes and suitcase.
Snack size zip locks can also come in handy if you want to bag something within your 1 quart bag. I also use the small zip lock bags found at craft stores for medication, etc. You might want to stuff a few zip lock bags in the side of your
carry on..they come in handy.
I use 2 and 3-oz. plastic travel bottle I buy at REI. I have never had a leak. But remember that if these are in your carry-on they are traveling in the pressurized compartment of the plane. Bottles in your checked bags experience the pressure changes and have a greater chance of leaking.
After you go through security you can put the 1-quart bag inside another, larger, ziplock plastic bag if you're worried about leakage. On trips I bring a small variety of plastic bags, both ziplock and grocery, in case I have wet clothes or buy a lot of small items.
I double bag...1 quart baggie inside a 1 gallon baggie.
