Leaving Florence to cinque Terra

How far is this and am I correct in assuming I can take a train from Florence into Cinque Terra. When I leave Cingue Terra and head for either Arles orr Avignon, sould I rent a car (will have relied on public transportation thus far) or will I be fine on train/bus?? What is the distance from Cinque Terra to Monoco. I ultimatly will head to Barcelona from France...what is the best way to arrive in the shortest amoount of time?

Dawn, the train journey from Florence to the CT is very easy. It takes about 2.5hrs and you will change trains in either Pisa, La Spezia or both depending on the train run you select (numerous runs during the day). Not to worry. There are no direct trains to the CT from Florence.

You journey to Monaco from the CT is not complicated. On the Italian train website, I show a 5.0hr-5.5hr run to Monaco from Monterosso with a train change in either Genoa, Ventimilla or both depending on the run.

Kent's link goes to the www.bahn.de website. Excellent stuff there. CLICK HERE for a link to the train schedule on the www.trenitalia.com website.

Vernazza is available only on the local (milk run) trains. I expect that will be true of all five. I don't remember those trains running round the clock. So watch the schedules. As has been said, you can transfer to the local train either in Pisa or La Spezia. When you leave you'll go North and catch the faster trains in Genova (possibly some other choices) for the rest of your trip.

The trains stopping at the CT towns run from early morning to late in the evening. According to my CT schedule, 20 trains a day stop at Riomaggiore and Monterosso, the two south/north "bookends" to the CT. Fewer stop at Vernazza (15). Even fewer stop at Corniglia and Manarola (13).

I agree with Dawn. I love this sight and many thanks to all the responses from the other travelers. They are helping me plan my trip to England in June. This is my first trip to England so I need all the help and information I can get. Thank you all.
