Leasing a car in Western Europe and United Kingdom for 6 months

My husband and I plan to lease a car for 3 months in Western Europe and 3 months in the United Kingdom. We are starting in Madrid Spain. We will travel through Spain, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands. We will at that point travel to the United Kingdom. My Question is wheather to keep the same standard transmission car or have another delivered to London. I realize there are drop /off, /pick-up fees. We could also use mass transit and taxis but I feel this would be cumbersome and tiring for 6 months. Is there anyone with advice for me regarding this plan? Also I would love to hear recommendations about leasing companies. Auto Europe will not allow leasing in Spain and taking it to England. Also there is this issue of the driver on the left or right side of the car. It all feels very complicated to me. Any Advice would be appreciated.

there are plenty of previous posts about car leasing, if you do a search on the forum.
we have leased before. IMO I don't think I would take the car to the UK. Last year, we leased in europe and then organised a rental car in the UK. the roads in parts of the UK can be as difficult to drive as italy, for example.( very very narrow etc) having the 'wrong' sided car would just add to the difficulty. thus far, we have not had any problem leasing and have another planned for next year.
we did come across some americans in the UK with their europe leased car, the red number plates gave it away. we spoke to them briefly.

hope this helps.

First a side issue, unless you are an EU/Schengen citizen (you don't say), you are limited to 90 days in 180 in the Schengen Area (which includes all the countries you list except the UK) without a visa. Unless your trip includes February, 90 days is less than 3 months.
Driving a car with the steering wheel on the "wrong side" is tedious. Millions of UK tourists do it every year, but it does present problems. It is difficult to see to overtake. As you plan 3 months in the UK, getting a separate right-hand-drive car for this period would be sensible unless it is prohibitively expensive.

Manage your itinerary carefully to assure that you do not exceed 90 days (not 3 months) on the continent before heading to England. Both your arrival day and your departure day count.

Having a car in any big city in Europe is nothing but a pain in the butt. Parking will be expensive ( most city hotels do not provide this.. free or not) and driving in a large city is not conveneient to sightsee.. you likely wont find a parking space near where you want to go so will waste time trying to do so, public transport is much easier.

My cousin and her husband live in Paris.. they own a car, which sits in long term storage.. except when they take it out to visit their adult chidren in the summer and at Xmas.. they are elderly now and still just use public transport or taxis to get around the city.

Gas prices will blow your mind.. you live in the States.. you have no idea what its like everywere else( I was in Vegas a few weeks ago and couldn't believe how cheap American gas was.. !!) And there are highway tolls.

And several cities will have no go zones.. you drive through them you will receive a ticket later in the mail.. and some folks receive multiples of these as they are never aware of what they are doing when they are actually doing it.. if you are going to drive be very sure to memorise the different signs ( especially large cities in Italy )

Thank you all for good information.
We are planning to spend 90 days in the Schengen Region and 90 in the U.K. I generalized too much. We do have a carefully planned itinerary.
We do not plan to drive into the cities but park outside the cities, possibly at rail stations... we thought we would figure it out as we go along.
We are planning to see some cities but hope to be in the countryside and small towns much of the time.
I will be carrying medical supplies that would require another sizable bag that I don't want to be separated from for a very long time. Wish I could pick the things I need up in Europe but I won't have a mailing address. I am a type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump and sensor, with med's as well. It would be great to pick this stuff up at a pharmacy but the supplies are all mail order..
Any ideas appreciated.

Since those are critical supplies , I wouldn't leave bag in car while sightseeing in some places , thefts from rental cars not unheard of , risk ratio depends where you are of course , but can happen anywhere , only takes one jerk .
I have read some good posts on ideas to make theft from rental cars less easy for criminals , I would try and research that , things like backing into parking spots so trunk is really close to wall , hard for their to get behind car to pry open trunk etc

it is very possible to have a car AND enjoy cities in europe. we have spent many months doing it ( in numerous countries) and are planning another 2 month trip next year, leasing a car for a little over a month of that. granted it takes some planning and thinking but I think we actually have enjoyed it much more as we have sometimes stayed just outside the larger city and caught local transport into the city. which was great. the best of both worlds. (seeing how locals get around and visiting the small towns at the same time) the hotels are cheaper as well
also finding hotels in larger cities (when needed) with parking, has not been that much of a problem. once again park the car and catch transport into the centre etc. it gives you a break from driving for a day or so.
eg: staying at jesolo outside venice, fiesole outside florence etc.etc two interesting smaller towns to visit , in their own right.

hope you have a great time.

I'm surprised by your statement, "Auto Europe will not allow leasing in Spain and taking it to England." When I look at http://www.autoeurope.com/long-term-car-rental/locations/, it appears to allow that.

I did a 6-month car lease for my first big European trip. It cost about $3,000 and still does. The leasing programs that I'm aware of are all based in France and provide Continental-standard, left-hand drive cars. I picked up my Peugeot in London and drove it all around the UK and Ireland, despite being on the wrong side, and then all around the Continent, dropping in France.

Taking the car onto ferries might cost up to $100 per ferry, such as from Harwich to Hook of Holland by DFDS Seaways, but not a huge deal, in the scheme of things. Or the service that takes cars through the Channel Tunnel is EuroTunnel; you ride inside of your car on that train ride.

We will research leasing again, apparently we must have entered info incorrectly. Thank you for your response. I think calling might be better than the online reservation site.

Hi there, I can totally understand your condition, I know this type of situation demands a lot of research, plannings and commitments. Yes, there are options for leasing your car and taking it out overseas. Definitely it involves different legal issues which one need to handle, but you can lease it according to your requirements. Apart from this you can also ship your car there if you plan to stay longer, because I think it's affordable or may as same as paying for a leasing company. Having your car with you can be better I guess. One of my friends has shipped his car with a professional shipping company which was very satisfying without any complications and also recommend me to try this out when ever I need.
