How long does it take for the ferry to cross to Portsmouth? Then what is the best way to Heathrowe once you are in England?

Depending upon the day of the week, there are sometimes one and sometimes two ferries/day. Travel time ranges between 5hr30min and 8hr15min. See the timetables and fares at www.directferries.co.uk.
Your fastest route to Heathrow would be a train from Portsmouth to Woking and a bus from there to the airport. See the Journey Planner at www.nationalrail.co.uk.

We had that situation a couple of years ago. I think the fastest is a train back to Paris and the Eurostar to London. We took the Ferry because we were not in that big a hurry but it took all day by the time we took the ferry, taxi to the train, waited for the next train, and the train ride to London.
