Le Cinque Terra

First time in Italy - Spending last 9 days of October in Montecatini with a tour group. We have 3 free days. Would like to spend the day in Le Cinque Terra. Have seen very confusing posts about the BEST way of getting there. - Undoubtedly it is by rail - just need to know how. Any help for this confused traveler will be appreciated.

Hi Linda. Yes, by train; it will be a 2 to 3 hour ride with change in Viareggio. Might want to consider staying overnight? Go to site trenitalia.com, use 'Montecatini Terme-Monsummano' and Monterosso for the stations, and use a date in the next seven days to see the schedules and prices. Do not buy tix in advance; just buy when there. Enjoy your trip!

Hi Linda, We stayed in Vernazza for 3 nights and walked the trail from village to village. Very Beautiful! We picked up the "milk train" actually a small train line that runs from LaSpezia to Genoa. You can get on and off at any of the villages. The Eurail pass covers the train. You can go to the ticket counter at any train station (Milan, Floence or where ever) and they wil print out a schedule for you. That way you will know exactually how to get thete. It is easy and you wil enjoy it. Jackie

Hi Linda We were at the Cinque Terra Last year. We stayed in Levanto which is at the northern end of the towns. It was very convenience as the boat leaves for the villages from this point. It stops along the way and you can get off. The TI office was very helpful and we bought our return tickets from there which covered both boat and trains. We stayed on the boat then caught the train to the next village, except the 1st sector we walked the Via del amore. Just a short walk with lovely scenery. Doing the boat and train gives you the best of both worlds.
Hope this helps.

Just a heads up that the boats don't operate if the sea is rough. If you are planning on the boat, it's best to have a Plan B, just in case.

And I thought I saw a post last week saying all the coast trails were closed. I'll see if I can find it.
