I am looking at flights from US to London. About $300 cheaper per ticket to go with Iceland Air with quick connection in Reykjavik. However, it is only 65 minutes on the way in and 95 minutes on the way back. Having never been through Reykjavik, is this doable? Options as far as timing seem to be very limited.
Hi Jenny, I'm going to London via Icelandair at the end of this month. People have assured me that the layover at Rejkjavik is very doable. The airport is rather small and there should be enough time to make your connecting flight.
I went with Icelandair because of the great price.
No sweat - the airport is tiny. That's enough time to make a switch. Next time, I'd highly recommend taking advantage of their stopover in Iceland...well worth it (it ended up being the highlight of my trip to Germany).
Yes it's very doable, particularly if you 65 min layover occurs in the early morning, as mine do when I fly from Seattle leaving on the 4:30 pm departure. Flight usually gets to Reykavik about 5-6 am local time and the airport is small and very few of the shops are open, so not crowded. It's very doable to walk from your arrival gate to departure gate and grab a beverage and bathroom break on the way.
My last 4 times, the layover has only been 40 minutes going to the US from Germany, and 50 min. coming back. Entirely doable and very easy.
We've done it twice with no problem. An advantage flying east is that you clear Schengen border control at Reykjavik, saving time at your destination if it's in the Schengen area.
You should know that Icelandair planes are narrow-body 3-3 seating, like our domestic flights, instead of widebody like the transatlantic nonstops. And that Icelandair charges for food. You can bring your own, though, and with the $300 you save you can eat pretty well!
Thank you all for the responses! Good to know that it should work well. I've been eyeing the stay over that they offer, but am afraid it may have to wait for another trip - but Iceland is definitely on the list!
I've done this and I loved the Reykjavik airport. Don't miss the restrooms in the airport!
We just flew Icelandair from Boston to Paris and back with about the same amount of time for transfer at Reykjavik as you mention, and it was a breeze.
