late train from Rome to Florence

We are arriving in Rome on a late afternoon flight 6:30pm on May 18 and we need to get to Florence that evening. We are taking the Leonardo Express to Termini. There is a 22:35 train from Termini to Campo di Marte, Florence which takes 3 hrs. Should I reserve this train for 5 people through Trentalia to ensure a seat. Or can I just use one of our saver passes?

The need to reserve to insure a seat is low. If that is the only reason to reserve then there is no need. Even with a pass, a reservation is required on all trains except for a Regional train.

Is there a reason you would not take one of the faster trains (. 1.5 hours) to Firenze S.M.N.? There is one at 20:45, as well as several before that. These would get you there well before midnight, unlike the one you describe above.

Arriving at 18:30, you have 2hrs 15 min to get to Termini to catch the last high-speed non-stop to Florence at 20:45. The Leonardo Express runs every 30 minutes from in front of Terminal 3. The journey time is 32 minutes. You can buy your tickets through to Florence SMN at the Terminal 3 train station. Expect a fare of 59Euro per person unless there is anybody under the age of 3. They ride free. Next, the LE comes in on track 24 or 25 at Termini. Make sure that you have at least 5-7 minutes between trains as you will be a few minutes away from your high-speed on the lower numbered tracks. If your plane is late, you could be too late for the last high-speed non-stop which leaves you with the the 22:35 train you mentioned above.
