Hi...
Has anyone ever purchased an airline ticket within a month of leaving? I'd like to wait as long as possible to purchase a ticket for travel in late Oct and am wondering if deals can still be found that late in the game. The trip doesn't have to be made, so it's no big deal if a get a flight, I am just curious if anyone has actually founds deals last min on flights to Europe. I would be flying to Belgium or Norway.

It's actually pretty useful to have a few different stashes of frequent flyer miles for close-in bookings because some airlines will open up additional award inventory a month our or less. (Lufthansa, bookable with United miles, will often add premium cabin award seats a week ahead of departure) There are also programs like Air France/KLM's Flying Blue that have monthly promotional awards- example- they will run monthly promotions where something like Atlanta, Dallas, and Edmonton (or New York City or Montreal) will be half off for award redemptions to all kinds of destinations in Europe the two airlines serve.
Flying Blue is a partner with many credit card rewards programs and points for surveys programs. I've got about 70K in my FB account right now waiting for the right deal without ever crediting a flight to that program.

Sometimes there are good last minute deals for one-way flights too, especially if you're willing to connect somewhere.
