Can somebody tell how the Large Family Discount works in Spain? My husband, 3 kids (15,14,11) and I are travelling to Spain in July 2011 and I'm looking at the train/bus options. Thanks.
I travel to Spain frequently, but am not aware of any discount such as you mention for traveling....the various hotels, hostals, etc., sometimes do offer rooms that will accommodate larger size groups. You can get discounts on the train travel by checking the renfe site up to 62 1/2 days before the journey, but they apply for individuals, not only for larger groups.
Actually, there is a "Large Family Discount" on the trains, but it appears that it requires certification of your status by the Spanish or local government. Here is what it says on the RENFE website: "To receive the ticket and if required during the journey, the traveler should present in the sales points the official title in force of large family identification or a certified photocopy of this that has been issued, individually or collectively, by the autonomous region in which he/she resides." Children from 3 to 14 can get a 40% discount on the AVE trains; you can enter this during the process if you are purchasing on the website. Or if you are buying at the ticket window, just ask for it. Discounts for youths 14 to 26 require a Carnet Joven or "Rail Plus Junior Card>' All this information is on the Renfe website under "prices and discounts." Actually you'll get the best price by buying ahead on the website and getting the 60% discount with a Web fare (on AVE trains). This would apply to all of the tickets, not just the kids. People say to buy 62 1/2 days in advance, but for the tickets I just purchased the discounts did not appear right away; I waited until the next morning and then there they were.
