Lake Orta to Milan Best Transportation to Airport

Our Trip ends in Lake Orta and we are extending our stay there for a few more days prior to our journey home. The question is what is our best mode of transportation? I assume the train from Lake Orta to the Milan Train Station(very hectic), then we need transportation to the Milan Malpensa airport. If anyone has experience traveling this route please respond. Thanks for your time

If you are on the RS Village Italy tour that ends here, I'd really not suggest staying in Lake Orta longer. I had us staying an extra night and honestly by noon of the tour departure day we were ready to go. I'd either go to another lake or into Milan for a couple of nights if you might be interested in the Duomo and the Last Supper among other things.

Again, if it's the Village Italy guide, and you do decide to stay longer, they will give you the name of the transportation shuttle they'll be using for the group (they arrange it, you pay the driver) and they can take you directly to Malpensa. Malpensa is actually closer to Orta San Giulio than Milan is.

When I did this trip pre-Covid there was not a ticket window at the station that services Orta so the ones taking a train elsewhere had to buy their tickets in Levanto before we left Cinque Terre (the guide cued people to this and helped them). Now with apps you can do the purchase via app so that would work out fine, but again, no need to go into Milan if you are going to the airport.

I see there is fast rail route to Malpensa from Orta Miasino. There is just a bit of walking involved.

There are 2 train stations in Novara, the main Trenitalia station and the Trenord station, referred to as Novara Nord. It is about a 300 yard walk between them. You arrive at the main station, and go down to the under passage used to change platforms. Walk away for the station building to the end and there is a stairway and an elevator up to street level. You always have to be prepared that the elevator might be out of order.

At the street, you will see the Nord platforms on the other side of a fence. Turn left and walk about 200 ft across the tracks at the street crossing, then turn right about 100 yards along the platforms into the station. Take the train from there to Busto Arsizio, and there a train to Malpensa.
This photo shows the main station stairway on the left, and the Nord platforms on the right behind the advertising sign.

Per the current schedule, leave Ort Miasino at 8:04, arrive Novara at 8:43. you have 27 minutes to get to Nord station to get the train to Bust Arsizio Nord at 9:11, then 17 minutes to get the train to Malpensa, arriving at Terminal 1 at 10:04.

It is not only the fastest way, but also the cheapest at 11.40 EUR. All other ways cost more and take at least an hour longer.

We went to Lake Orta with friends, not on a tour. We tired of it quickly and kept driving down the hill to Lake Maggiore to spend time there. I wouldn’t extend on Lake Orta. A day or two on your tour is more than enough.
