Lake Como to Castelrotto by Train

We would like to take a train from Varenna to Castelrotto in June. What is the easiest way to do this? I realize that the train will only get us as far as Bolzano and than we will need to take a bus, but I am having a hard time find figuring out the train portion.

Lisa,

Actually, that will be a very straightforward trip, using this route.....

  • Varenna to Milano Centrale (about 1H:03M)
  • Milano Centrale to Bolzano (I didn't check the time) - probably a change at Verona Porta Nuova
  • Bolzano to Castelrotto via Bus (takes about an hour as I recall) - the Bus station is about a block from the train station, to the left as I recall but I'd have to check my notes). The Bus makes a couple of stops before it gets to Castelrotto, so be sure to ask the driver when to disembark.

Hi, Lisa. www.trenitalia.com will give you the whole Varenna-Bolzano schedule, with two connections. If you usually use DB for schedules, then you still have to find the Varenna-Milan portion through Trenitalia or www.trenord.it.

What Ken said!

A suggestion: in Bolzano stow your bags at the bus station and take in Otzi the Ice Man at the Archeology Museum. The museum has a nice display of this incredible find of almost 25 years ago, and related items. Its an easy walk from the station to the museum. See the RS Italy guide book for details.

Have a great trip.
