Lake Como area of Italy

What is the best way to travel from Florence to lake Como and where would some good choices be to stay two nights or so while we are there?

We loved Varenna, specifically Albergo Milano in a lakefront room. To get there from Florence, you take the Eurostar Italia train to Milano Centrale (1 hr. 45 minutes) and change there for a regional train to Varrena-Esino, taking 1 hour 3 minutes. Be ready to hop off the train when it stops, as they don't wait very long!

steve, The information from Lola is spot-on! One point to add - the trip from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino is on a Regionale, so DON'T FORGET to validate your ticket in the yellow or blue/gray machine prior to boarding the train. Those caught with unvalidated tickets may be fined on the spot and the fines start at €50 PP! You'll go through a tunnel just prior to arrival in Varenna. As mentioned, be ready to disembark promptly. You should be able to walk to your Hotel (depending on which hotel you choose). The Guidebook has good hotel suggestions, but a few you could consider..... > Albergo Milano - fantastic, but it's often booked up, so be sure to get reservations SOON. > Albergo Olivedo - older but very comfortable hotel by the Ferry dock. They also manage a Villa next to the Hotel. > Eremo Gaudio - a nice hotel located up on the side of the hill above town (take a Taxi from the station) - fantastic views! > Villa Cipressi - an elegant old mansion right in the centre of town. > Hotel Royal Victoria - very nice hotel, right in the main Piazza across from the Church. Happy travels!
