My wife and I are going to be visiting Cinque Terre and then wanted to get to Barcelona. Is that train worth the long ride to save the cost of a hotel? This trip is our first and is all about the adventure, so I am leaning towards the train. What does the board say?
A quick look at the schedules indicates an 18 to 22 hour train ride, with multiple train changes which means you don't sleep much even on an overnight ride. Another option to consider, that saves the cost of a hotel and also avoids getting only a few hours sleep on a train, is flying from Genova, Pisa, or other city. You probably want to explore both options and compare the time and cost. The problem with stopping in Nice, Marseilles, etc. is it's still a long train ride.
The last time I looked up a night train run from the CT to Barcelona, the closest you can get is to take a 4hr. train to Torino to pick up the 372 Salvador Dali night train from Torino to Barcelona. You can get some sleep on this train but the overall trip is 16 hours. The alternative is to take non-sleepers to southeastern France to meet up with the same train. Not much sleep here.
For flying, Vueling, EasyJet and ClickAir fly to Barcelona from Milan Malpensa. ClickAir flies to Barcelona from Pisa.
