Koblenz to Moselkern

Hi, Can anyone tell me what a one way ticket would cost from Koblenz to Moselkern? The DB web site is telling me those fairs are unavailable. Thanks, Wendy Wendy

The fare is available on the website of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Mosel, www.vrm.info. It's a Preisstufe 7 (price level 7) ticket A single trip (one way) ticket is €6,70. Round trip (2 one ways) would be €13,40, but a PS 7 Tageskarte (day ticket) would also be €13,40 and would give you unlimited rides for the day between Koblenz and Moselkern. . . . . . . ¶ The VRM includes the area around Koblenz, up the river to Oberwesel, but not Bacharach, down the river to below Remagen, and up the Mosel past Bullay. . . . . . ¶ In case anyone is interested, here (www.mobilitaetsportal.info/index.php?seitenID=58) is a map of all the Verkehrsverbünde in Germany. Most of Germany is in a Verkehrsverbund. In general, the Bahn does not sell online, tickets for travel entirely within a single Verkehrsverbund, but you can buy them at ticket counters of the Bahn.

Don't forget Laender or Schoenes Wochende tickets, about 35 Euros for unlimited travel on regional trains for up to five people for one day....... You need to ride a regional to stop at Moselkern anyway and it covers both ways and unlimited hopping on and off during the day for the group..........I've ridden that way before but can't recall if it was a Schoenes Wochende (good on weekends but across state/province boundaries) or a Laender (good any day within state/province boundaries) ticket. I can never remember where the provinces, or Laender, boundaries are.......While you are at it. I highly recommend going to Trier for the morning and stopping at Moselkern, presumably for Burg Eltz, on the way back.

The Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket cost €37 and is only price effective for travel across several Länder. Koblenz, Moselkern, and Trier are all in Rheinland-Pfalz and a Rheinland-Pfalz (Länder) ticket is €28 and will cover up to 5 people for the whole day, all the way up the Mosel to France. For unlimited travel all day long for up to 5 people in the VRM, a VRM Minigruppenkarte for €20 (Netzfahrscheine) will cover you.

Wendy, could you elaborate on why you're travelling to Moselkern? Are you stopping there to visit Burg Eltz? If so, were you planning to hike through the woods or take a Taxi?

I can't imagine any reason anyone would stop in Moselkern except to walk to Burg Eltz. As far as taxis are concerned, I don't think you would normally find them in Burg Eltz. There are a couple of towns (for example Hatzenport) closer to Koblenz (and Burg Eltz) that might have taxi service.

LEE, that's why I was asking. When I was there in late June / early July, I found that there are NO Taxi's in Moselkern (there was a sign to that effect right at the rail station). I wasn't too keen on the walk due to a previous knee injury, but fortunately a helpful local arranged a Taxi for me. ¶ For those that are interested in taking a Taxi to the car park at Burg Eltz, it's better to get off the train in Löf as that's where the Taxi's are based (it's the next town upstream on the Mosel). One caveat though - be sure to allow for the Taxi ride in the budget, as it WASN'T cheap! ¶ I believe details on the Taxi are in the Guidebook, but I can post the phone numbers and other details here if anyone is interested (I made sure to obtain their business card). Cheers!

Not to put too fine a point on it, but those two towns, Hatzenport and Löf are "downstream" from Moselkern (the Mosel flows north). Hatzenport is the next town before Moselkern coming south from Koblenz. I have no idea which towns, if any, have taxis, but Hatzenport is closer to Münstermaifeld on the route leading to Burg Eltz. Löf is a bigger town.

LEE, I wasn't sure which direction the Mosel flowed, but somehow had it "set" in my mind that it flowed away from Koblenz. ¶ The helpful person in Moselkern that arranged the Taxi for me indicated that the Taxi in Löf was the only one in the area that provided service to Burg Eltz. The fare seemed to be on a "flat rate" basis rather than being metered. The station in Löf is quite small, basically just a platform with a small "Bus Shelter" type enclosure (I probably have a photo but would have to check).

Hi, Thank you all for your replies. Yes we plan on going to Burg Eltz and walking. I plan on getting a Rheinland-Pfaz ticket, I know you can't use these until after 9am, I was maybe thinking of getting an earlier start than 9 wondering what a one way ticket would have cost. Wendy

"wondering what a one way ticket would have cost" Koblenz to Moselkern? I believe Lee gave you the price in his first post.

Yes, I did. It's €6,70. Don't worry about the Tageskarte; it has the same 9 AM restriction as the Rheinland-Pfalz Ticket. . . . . . ¶ But, how far are you going? You only need the RL-P ticket if you are going farther up the Rhein than Oberwesel, farther down than Remagen/Linz (to Bonn), or farther up the Mosel than Bullay (to Trier). Otherwise the €20 Minigruppentageskarte (Netzfahrscheine) would do the same as the RL-P (also only after 9).

Hi Lee, We are going to Bacharach after our visit to Burg Eltz. I don't think a minigroup ticket would work. Wendy

Also, what day are you traveling on? If it's a weekend day, the weekend ticket works........If not, you may still save money depending on how many people are in your party. For two, you need more than a couple one way tickets to justify buying the pass. For four, it pays for itself pretty quickly.

Wendy, so you are starting in Koblenz, going up the Mosel to Burg Eltz, then eventually up the Rhein to Bacharach. Regardless of the day, use the Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket, €28 for 2-5 people, €20 for one person. . . . . . ¶ Rheinland-Pfalz includes everything to the south and west of Rhein River, to the French border, and down the Rhein almost to Bonn, including both sides of the Mosel in Germany. It includes Moselkern, Koblenz, and Bacharach. Aachen and Bonn are in Nordrhein-Westfalen, which includes Köln and Düsseldorf. So if you were going on to Köln that day (weekend), you would want to use the Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket.
