Knives on trains?

So there's two parts to this question:

  1. What is train security like in Italy?
  2. I'm planning on bring a pocket knife with me on my Euro trip (make picnics and things a little easier). In addition to the pocket knife, I might look to purchase an old Sabatier knife while in Paris. So this means that a.) I'll be checking my bags in on the flight from the US-Europe and back and the flight from Paris-Venice.

But will this pose any issues on the train trips throughout Italy? Thanks.

Trains should not be an issue (except for the Eurostar under the channel) as long as you do not wield them during the trip.

Check though on the checked baggage allowances for the Paris-Venice airline you are taking. Some Budgets (RyanAir) are looking at gateside checking, meaning you need to go through security to check your bag, meaning no knives.

Other than that, you should be fine.

Not sure about Italy, but in Spain --- first experience: From Toledo to Madrid, I had purchased three complete sets of kitchen knives - about 21 in all, for myself and gifts. Had them in the suitcase, wrapped in paper, no problem whatsoever. second experience - Had ONE knife in suitcase, wrapped in paper. Major difficulty! Was finally able to put it in a tupperware container in my suitcase, wrapped shut with duc-tape!! Guess it depends on who the inspector may be...the last inspector said the knife had to be in a sealed container...the others there with him looked perplexed - could tell they did not interpret the rules the same as he did.

We will be checking bags on our EasyJet flight from Paris to Venice, but aside from that just local trains... and just a pocket knife. The Rambo knife stays at home. Although if I find a nice 10 inch Sabatier, that might accompany the pocket knife in the suitcase.
