KLM LAX/FCO via Amsterdam

Hi, we will be flying to Rome via Amsterdam with KLM. I have heard that the airport while big is an easy transfer. We have 2 hours between flights on the way over and more than that on the return.
When we land in Amsterdam I understand that we need to go through security and passport control? In the past we travelled through Zurich and if I remember correctly when we arrived from the US we went through security and passport control as well? Am I correct? I also remember arriving in Rome, getting our luggage and walking out without any stops.
Am I remembering this correctly or am I blanking on some details?
Thanks.

Your memory is good. You go through passport control in AMS and get your passport scanned and stamped for entry into the Schengen treaty zone. You'll get your luggage in Rome and go though customs, which usually means just walking out the door marked "Nothing to declare". On the way home, you will once again go through passport control and get your passport stamped for exiting the Schengen zone. Flying to the US, you will go through security again and as of quite recently, asked to power up any electronic devices in your possession. If you can't power them up, you cannot take them on board, so make sure they are fully charged when you travel home.

Here's a video made by the airport, showing the transfer procedure (although someone posted that the security locations are being changed, so be prepared to go with the flow): http://tinyurl.com/d8xlclk
